How It Began
Rewind to the Summer of 2010. Julian Platt (pictured above) and his wife Andie — owners of a French artisan bakery and bistro in South Africa — sensed the specialty coffee trend was on the rise. So, they acquired an early-style air roaster and started roasting.
That was a good hunch. After roasting up to 2.5 tons of coffee a month for ten years, with incredible results and no control over the roast process besides setting a target temperature, Julian found his current air roaster needed to catch up.
An inventor at heart, he started to design and build his own roaster from his growing wishlist. After a year of development with two engineers, Julian began to see his vision come to life in the form of his first Air-Motion Roaster prototype.
Since the early days of this prototype roaster, Julian has worked closely with an expert engineering team on roaster fabrication and ongoing aesthetic and technical improvements. The result is a product line of our 3-kilo, 6-kilo, and 12-kilo air roasters, all conformed to international standards.
How It’s Going
Today, Air-Motion Roasters is a thriving company headquartered in Johannesburg, with offices and a showroom to showcase its high-tech, efficient, environmentally friendly roasting process. And now, with its trusted distributor network, including our US team, Air-Motion Roasters are shipped globally.
